Kidney: nephron

Basic anatomy

The kidney can be divided into an outer cortex and an inner medulla. The medulla is composed of renal pyramids. Each kidney typically has 8-18 pyramids.

Each pyramid indents a minor calyx. Two to three minor calyces converge to form a major calyx. The major calyces merge to form the renal pelvis.

The renal pelvis is continuous with the upper ureter.
