MRCEM Notes

Microbe proliferation

Microbe adaptions for increased virulence:
  • Neisseria meningitidis: is an IgA protease producer
  • Staphylococcus aureus: is an expressor of protein A which inhibits complement activation
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae: has a specialised capsule which inhibits neutrophil action
  • Vibrio cholerae: is a flagellated motile microbe, enhancing its virulence

Microbe attachment strategies:
  • Influenze: haemagglutinin antigen
  • Giardia: specialised sucking disc
  • P.falciparum: red cell protein expression
  • HIV: CD4 binding
