Oxytocin

Oxytocin is a peptide of nine amino acids which is secreted by the posterior pituitary gland.

NotesFurther detail
SourceSynthesized in the paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus, released by the posterior pituitary
FunctionLet-down reflex of lactation: causes contraction of the myoepithelial cells of the alveoli of the mammary glands

Uterine contraction
In contrast prolactin, which is also released in response to suckling promotes the production of milk, as opposed to the let-down
RegulationIncreases secretion
  • infant suckling
  • levels may increase during orgasm
A synthetic version of oxytocin (Syntocinon) is routinely given in the third stage of labour and is used in the management of post-partum haemorrhage

Adverse effects
  • uterine hyperstimulation
  • water intoxication and hyponatraemia
