MRCEM Notes

Clozapine

Typical antipsychotics were the first antipsychotics introduced and are renowned for side effects (extrapyramidal side effects and rarely neuroleptic malignant syndrome) so are not often used.

The newer atypical drugs (amisulpride, olanzapine, clozapine, risperidone) have a better side effect profile.

Risperidone comes in an injection form so is useful for patients who aren't compliant to oral medication.

Specific knowledge required for the FRCEM Primary is the nature and pharmacological basis of extrapyramidal symptoms in antipsychotics. Dosages and details of specific drugs are not required.
