Landmarks for chest drain insertion

1. Mid axillary or anterior axillary lines are acceptable.
2. Typically the 4th or 5th intercostal space are used, counting down from the 2nd ICS. The diaphragm rises to the level of the 5th rib medially so a drain shouldn't be inserted lower than the 5th ICS.
