Muscular Pharynx

The pharynx is a hollow muscular tube forming part of the aero-digestive tract that connects the oral and nasal cavities to the larynx and oesophagus. It extends from the skull base to the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage (C6 spinal level)

Muscular Pharynx Key Points

  • Located between the skull base and oesophagus
  • Ends inferiorly at C6 level
  • The preverterbral fascia lies posteriorly (which is important due to the potential of spread of local infection)
