Rotator Cuff Testing
On this page
Supraspinatus
The empty can test (ECT) or Jobe test is used to test the integrity of the Supraspinatus tendon. The Full Can test is a modified version that can also be used to test the Supraspinatus but is thought to be less provocative. Pain and/or weakness are considered positive findings. The test has a sensitivity of around 70%
Subscapularis
The lift off test or Gerber's test is used to test the integrity of the Subscapularis tendon. Inability to lift the dorsum of the hand off the back is suggestive of subscapularis dysfunction or rupture
Teres minor and infraspinatus
As can be seen in the video below. Teres minor and infraspinatus lie adjacent to one another and both insert onto the greater tubercle of the humerus. These two muscles are often tested together by external rotation of the humerus. Externally rotating with the arm abducted eliminates the action of the deltoid.
